Infrastructure Database Engineering Manager
Overview
Seeking a seasoned Infrastructure manager to take on overall accountability for the delivery and support of M&T’s Oracle platform. The candidate will be managing the engineering team that is responsible for ensuring the availability and resiliency of the estate and for driving the shift in the team mindset towards more agile/DevOps processes. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring that proper monitoring and alerting are in place, that the responses to alerts are well documented and increasingly achieved through automation. The candidate will partner with other application and infrastructure managers to ensure that the Oracle roadmap supports that of the business users, that we are increasingly enabling delivery teams to meet their goals through better self service options and increased observability of the database platforms. The candidate should be able to motivate teams through the process of “shifting left” to better empower delivery teams while also focusing on the stability of the platform owned by the team. We are seeking a strong manager with experience leading teams through change to help drive standards and best practices both internal and external to the team. Communication will be key as this role will require working with senior managers, business partners, technology and governance partners to recommend and deliver robust and scalable solutions.
Job Responsibilities
• Continue efforts to standardize, consolidate and streamline the database footprint, including an ongoing Exadata migration effort
• Partner with the Automation lead on the creation and prioritization of automation use cases
• Own the recruiting and onboarding process for new Oracle Database Engineers
• Partner with the Service Architect to own, document, socialize and test the Resiliency of the platform on an ongoing basis
• Partner closely with the other Database Team Managers to create a Database Reliability Engineering function
• Ensure that the Oracle monitoring system is redundant and well maintained and that alerts are relevant and tightly managed
• Encourage and promote a team mindset in the Oracle group
• Foster an open exchange of knowledge, ideas and code (where appropriate) within the team and with the application delivery teams
• Ensure appropriate escalation procedures are in place and enforced and that the team’s ticket/request queues are managed to meet SLOs
• Set team direction and motivates staff to achieve direction. Promotes a culture of “team first” and self-management in performing task identification, prioritization and deliverable definition, due dates, and resource planning
• Increase standardization of core processes; improve processes in support of strategic imperatives and programs.
• Helps to define and holds the team accountable for SLOs
Requirements
• 5+ years experience in technology management
• Experience with Infrastructure Automation (prefer experience with ansible)
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Preferred familiarity with capacity planning and forecasting processes
• Ability to balance the need to drive shorter term tactical solutions to critical issues with the need to drive towards longer term strategic solutions
• Strong understanding of Infrastructure technologies such as Linux/Unix,
• Preferred experience/exposure to Oracle database technologies, should have a good foundational understanding of commercial DBMS products
