Organizational Overview

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Radio Frequency Group has an opportunity for an entry level/early career Electronic Engineering Technician to provide support for all RF systems throughout the Collider-Accelerator complex. You will repair, troubleshoot, construct, install and test components of the RF system. This includes precision analog/digital electronics, power supplies, high power RF amplifiers, etc. You will work alongside a group of talented engineers and technicians on challenging projects. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Troubleshoot and repair electronic systems down to the component level
• Build and test prototype electronics
• Repair / rework surface mount circuit boards
• Support particle accelerator operations and troubleshoot and repair rf systems

Position Requirements
• Requires an associate degree in a technical field or equivalent relevant experience, or technical institute graduate with relevant field work experience
• Ability to repair, modify, and build electronic systems from schematic drawings
• Solid understanding of analog and digital circuits
• Ability to read and understand schematics
• Ability to respond to equipment failures during off-hours
• Clear and concise communication skills
• Strong attention to detail

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Training, education or experience with radio frequency systems
• Familiarity with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers and network analyzers
• Proficiency in the use of hand tools and machine shop equipment

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
• Hand / eye coordination
• Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds
• Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
• Must be able to climb a ladder and work at heights above 6 feet

• Must have valid drivers’ license
• Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications
