The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory is entering an exciting new chapter with one of the newest and most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) enables the study of material properties and functions with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing world-leading capabilities for X-ray imaging and high-resolution energy analysis.

This facility is open to users from academia and industry and its operations are at a time when the world enters a new era with a global economy fueled largely by scientific discoveries and technological innovations. NSLS-II provides the research tools needed to foster new discoveries and create breakthroughs in critical areas such as energy security, environment, and human health.

Position Description

The Insertion Devices group in the Accelerator Division is seeking an electromechanical Technician The selected candidate will report to the NSLS-II Insertion Device Group Leader. National Synchrotron Light Source-II.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Use techniques in the construction of permanent magnet, electromagnet, vacuum, water-cooling, and instrumentation systems

Coordinate daily operations for the Magnet measurement laboratory

Position Requirements

The equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or engineering field, considerable job-relevant training, and at least six (6) years in-depth and related experience in a broad technical field

Knowledge of techniques used in the construction of permanent magnet, electromagnet, vacuum, water-cooling and instrumentation systems.

Familiarity with advanced methods for optical survey, metrology, and precision drives and encoders.

Ability to interpret detail/assembly drawings and technical procedures,

Excellent written and oral communication skills,

proficient machining and fabrication skills,

Demonstrated ability to coordinate daily operations for the Magnet Measurement Laboratory,

Demonstrated ability to work in a small, dynamic team of engineers, scientists and technicians.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (experience in at least one or more of the following):

high precision motion systems: stepper and servo motors, drivetrains.

instrumentation and controls: vacuum, pressure, temperature, and flow.

cryogenic measurement, straight wire, Hall probe map benches.

performing precision machining of a wide variety of materials using common machine tools; lathes, mills, drill press, and saws.

wiring electronic chassis and signal cables

software tools such as MS Excel, MS Project, CAD and Linux operating system.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

Physical coordination and balance

Vision, good near and distance

Ability to Hear and understand speech

Lifting, moderate 40 lbs

Ability to drive lab vehicles

OTHER INFORMATION:

Candidate will be placed at appropriate level contingent upon depth and breadth of experience.
