Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

Under the general direction of the Executive Director of the Engineering Unit, the selected candidate will perform electrical engineering design work of moderate difficulty including reviews & management of the work product of consultants for technical accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and cost effectiveness. The selected candidate shall be an Electrical Engineer experienced in the designs of electrical power (HV & LV Systems), lighting, HVAC controls, fire alarm, and security systems for the complex institutional and/or jail facilities. The candidate will also perform design reviews for the designs documents submitted by the private engineering consultants and perform in-house designs for DOC’s construction program. Duties will also include preparing project scopes; prepare cost estimates; perform site surveys and facility inspections; prepare project reports; perform facility condition assessment surveys; prepare in-house designs utilizing AutoCAD & Revit; and provide technical expertise and support services for the complex Departmental projects. The candidate will interface with DOC user groups, DOC maintenance divisions, consultants, contractors and in-house design and construction units, oversights, other City/State and Federal agencies, DOC senior staff and inhouse technical staff.

Minimum Qual Requirements

(1) Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; and

(2) A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License. Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

A masters degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the electrical engineering experience required in “1″ above.

Preferred Skills
• A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, and 10 years of full-time design experience in mechanical engineering.
• Preferred candidate shall have a minimum of 10 years of electrical engineering experience in designs of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing and fire protection systems of commercial and institutional buildings including preparation of detailed design sketches, construction documents, and reviewing shop drawings.
• Familiarity with Sustainable Design concepts, NYC Energy Code, Building & Fire Code compliance, ASHRAE 90.1, and LEED requirements.
• The candidate must have good interpersonal, verbal and writing skills, and be skilled at resolving multi-discipline design and construction issues.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit and Microsoft suites is a plus
