Job Description

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Bachelor’s degree in physics, computer science, or related discipline
• A minimum of 3 years of full-time relevant experience
• Previous experience with multi-flavor Linux system administration
• Previous experience operating a high-availability scientific data center
• Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment with time-sensitive deadlines
• Experience with data center monitoring software (NLyte, Synapsense, Zabbix, etc)
• Prior research and collaboration experience within Physics or Computer science domains
• Experienced in C+ programming, have working knowledge of shell scripting and Python
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Experience with collaborative tools (Git, MatterMost, Slack, DropBox, Confluence, Overleaf, etc.)
• Experience with software and services such as:
• Virtualization and container software (RHEVM, Singularity, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, etc.)
• Configuration management and version control software (Puppet, Cobbler, Ansible, etc.)
• Object-oriented storage (S3, Swift, Ceph, etc.)
• Experience with data analytics and system performance monitoring tools (ELK, Grafana, etc.)
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
• Ability to perform physically demanding work occasionally

The SDCC has an opening for a Technology Engineer / Advanced Technology Engineer to contribute to and support BNL’s computing activities. In this position, you will be responsible for integrated operations of the various SDCC data centers on the BNL campus, supporting offline computing farms, operating storage systems, and participating in evaluating and adopting new technologies. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage operations of SDCC data centers on the BNL campus
• Integrate and operate Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) and Building Management System (BMS) software
• Operate computing farm hardware and software
• Operate and optimize high-performance storage systems
• Assist in the evaluation of new technologies
