Job Description

The Technology Infrastructure Engineering and Operations Team delivers and supports all the foundational technology used across M&T Bank. Supports Two Data Centers, 1 Service Desk, 32,000 End User Computing devices, 14,000 Distributed platforms, 24 Mainframe Regions and process approximately 635,000 automated jobs per month. In addition to that foundational technology level, we also own and deliver End User & Collaboration tools with a focus on Ease of Use for the individual employee. We deliver innovative, and compelling technology solutions to enhance the internal customer experience that enables our business partners to deliver.


This position provides technical engineering for new and existing system platforms support.

Apply security and patching measures for hardening to Linux/Windows operating systems.

Implement Disaster recovery procedures to include backup and potential system restoration.

Administer cybersecurity vulnerabilities; create and maintain installation, maintenance, and upgrade procedures.

Interact with development teams and evaluate, install, and maintain vendor products.

Develop and document technical processes and procedures as needed.

The Systems Engineer will be responsible for system documentation, tune system performance and install system wide software.

The successful candidate will be strong in Windows and/or Linux/Unix administration.

Design, develop, automate, and maintain production platforms using scripting languages to improve software configuration management release process

Configuration Management tool administration (Ansible Tower, GitHub, Jira, Jenkins, Confluence, and ServiceNow)

The successful candidate will complete activities related to larger and/or more complex installations, configuration, operations and maintenance of systems hardware / software and related infrastructure.

Position will assess platforms, help in determining problems, providing solutions to issues that arise, designing, upgrading, and maintaining platforms. To include, brainstorming possible improvements that can be made to system in the future.

Primary Responsibilities:

Work closely with Technology management, System Team Engineers, and application support teams on a daily basis to design, deploy, implement and manage multiple application platforms that provide various technical solutions that meet or exceed current and future needs of the organization.

Responsibilities may include infrastructure review, implementation, and design, creation of support and architectural documentation, standards, policies, analysis, and testing.

Facilitate meetings and conference calls with vendors, internal staff, and senior professionals.

Seek to expand knowledge and understanding of financial services trends, practices, and technologies on a continuous basis.

Follow and promote use of industry best practices, standards, and procedures.

Ability to initially identify potential operating procedures that can be automated for improved efficiency.

Identifies and proactively resolves issues that could impact application / server performance, reliability, and usability.

Possess an understanding of source control, continuous integration, infrastructure, automation, deployment, container, and cloud technologies.

Provisioning of infrastructure systems, management of server OS, security patch management and installation of third-party tools.

Perform root cause analyses of high impact service issues.

Respond to and resolve identified technical incidents requiring advanced problem-solving analysis and use of advanced diagnostic tools to troubleshoot issues.

Complete systems maintenance activities such as patching, health checks, validating changes and maintaining operational and configuration standards.

Maintain a working knowledge of specific systems and services supported by department. Work with senior technical staff to understand, manage, and support elements of the Bank service catalog. Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.

Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.

Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Participate in an on-call 24×7 rotation.

Develop monitoring and create dashboards to provide a view into how systems are performing.

Complete other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in a technical or server engineering position involving infrastructure design technologies, data management and interchange, system design and / or development for complex application.
