Organizational Overview

The Chemistry Division conducts fundamental and applied research to understand and control energy-relevant physical processes and chemical transformations in complex environments, with a primary theme to advance principles that will underlie new energy conversion and storage technologies that improve energy security and reduce the environmental impacts of energy use.

Position Description

The Chemistry Division seeks a full-time Technical Specialist. Under general technical direction, and with the exercise of initiative and judgment, the successful candidate will perform a wide variety of skilled technical assignments in support of the scientific mission of the Chemistry Division. Technical skills and techniques will be used to design, machine, fabricate, assemble, evaluate, test, operate, maintain, and integrate equipment and laboratory experimental systems including vacuum pumps, vacuum systems, fluid and pressurized gas handling systems, optomechanical and other mechanical systems, and a variety of electrical controls and instrumentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Work independently or in coordination with other technical support personnel on specific tasks and larger projects.

Assist in the design and specification as well as assemble mechanical, fluid-handling, gas-handling, and vacuum systems.

Assemble, install, commission, repair, maintain, and upgrade a variety of experimental equipment.

Machine/fabricate complex parts from a variety of materials using milling machines, lathes, etc.

Maintain the R&D machine shop, assure adequate materials and tooling supplies.

Perform housekeeping, labeling, storing, and proper disposal of hazardous materials in the R&D shop.

Stay current with all BNL required training.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires the equivalence of a technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or technical field, and at least four (4) years of relevant work experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in complex machining using shop equipment (milling machines, lathes, etc.)

Aptitude to plan, coordinate, and perform professional-level assignments in a broad technical field, under minimum technical direction with exercise of a high degree of initiative and judgment.

Manual dexterity and experience working with hand and power tools for both assembly and disassembly of equipment, as well as with fine work for scientific experimental setups.

Ability to work from procedures, drawings, user manuals, and verbal instructions.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of scientists and engineers.

Basic proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working proficiency in installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical, vacuum, plumbing, and gas systems.

Complex assemblies of scientific equipment using specialized tools.

Knowledge of low/high pressure gas systems and vacuum operations.

Basic proficiency in computer numerical control (CNC) machining.
