Job Description

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation, administration, maintenance, and security of IT infrastructure supporting Syracuse University Libraries staff and patrons. This position will review requests for system modifications and analyze the complexity, scope, and feasibility of implementing the modifications. They will assist with special projects such as new system implementation, integration, design, or migration. In conjunction with other LITS staff, draft proposals based on the evaluation of new technologies. Responds to security incidents, monitors, and mitigates IT security vulnerabilities and threats.

Shares desktop management/support, application packaging, account administration, help desk, meeting room, after hours on-call support, and copier/printing support with other LIT staff members. This position is eligible for partial remote work.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience plus 3-5 years relevant experience in information technologies / computer science, as necessary.

Familiarity with, and willingness to learn, these areas is required:
Windows and Linux server and concepts and best practices
Microsoft cloud platform (Office365, Azure) concepts and best practices
PowerShell scripting and task automation
Windows and macOS client management concepts and best practices
Database management (MS SQL, MySQL, SQL)
Utilize tools, utilities, and scripting for software packaging, OS deployment, and application deployment such as Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, Jamf, SpecOps, AdminStudio, PowerShell, and VBScript
Demonstrable expertise is required in these areas:
Investigating, diagnosing, and resolving complex technology issues
Desktop operating systems (Windows, MacOS)
Server operating systems (Windows, Linux)
Fleet management tools (Active Directory, Group Policy, JAMF)
Virtualization environments (VMWare, Hyper-V)
Network topology knowledge and troubleshooting skills

Responsibilities

Desktop Management/Support:
Utilize tools, utilities, and scripting for software packaging, OS deployment, and application deployment such as Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, Jamf, SpecOps, AdminStudio, PowerShell, and VBScript.
Stay current on computing security, privacy issues, and practice. Provide recommendations for enhancements based on best practices.
Provide desktop management via Active Directory GPO/GPP, PowerShell, and other scripting technologies.
Coordinate and communicate with other campus IT units.
Demonstrate skills in investigating, diagnosing, and resolving problems.
Deploy, maintain, upgrade, ensure security, enable network connectivity, and provide support for all public and staff Windows OS and Macintosh OS workstations in SU Libraries, Records Management, and SU Press.
Provide expert level support to other IT staff and advanced users.
Support (setup, configuration, software, and hardware upgrades) for copiers, printers, scanners, RFID equipment, barcode scanners, and other equipment.
Provide responsive and friendly customer service.
Provide presentation room support by maintaining and troubleshooting computers, data projectors, VCRs, PA system, and other required equipment.
Special Projects:
Review requests for system modifications and analyze the complexity, scope, and feasibility of implementing the modifications.
Assist with special projects, such as new system / application implementation, integration, system migration, or database conversion.
In conjunction with other LITS staff, draft proposals based on the evaluation of new technologies.
System Administration:
Administer multiple types of servers (VMware, Linux, and Windows).
Provide system monitoring and performance tuning of the servers.
Utilize tools and utilities for system and network administration.
Utilize virtualization software such as VMware.
Program server-side automation routines using scripting technologies.
Employ various network protocols, such as TCP/IP, SMTP, TLS, and SSH.
Create system and program documentation as needed for new and existing systems.
Recommend changes to existing systems or implementation of new systems as needed to improve the efficiency of the system or the process.
Database management using common tools and SQL.
Help Desk:
Communicate effectively with library staff, understand the nature of the library functions, and provide support and creative solutions.
Share responsibility for answering help desk extension and checking help desk email account.
Analyze requests and enter them in the help desk system, assign to appropriate staff member and follow- up with library and or technical staff when necessary.
Ensure that problem reports are dealt with in a timely manner.
Resolve escalated tickets from helpdesk and complicated troubleshooting issues.
Personnel Development:
Engage in self-learning activities to stay on top of emerging technologies.
Participate in professional development programs.
Research, development, and testing.
