Job Description

The Communication Technician is responsible for deploying, supporting, troubleshooting and repairing Voice, Data, Cable TV, and Wireless infrastructure. Candidates should have a working knowledge of Cisco PBX’s, voicemail systems, call center and switchboard applications, Service Provider connections and protocols. Candidates should be familiar with techniques for working with copper, coax, and fiber cables, including installation, terminations and testing. Candidates will be responsible for assisting with the maintenance of a Cisco VoIP phone system and related applications. Candidate will need to work totally unsupervised to troubleshoot and repair Voice, Data, CATV, Video and Wireless network issues that may arise.

-Install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain Voice, Data, CATV, Video, and Wireless communication equipment on all campuses. Including equipment such as VoIP/analog telephones, conference phones, fax machines, modems, credit card machines, alarms, handicap phones, PSTN circuits, Cable TV equipment, Wireless Access Points and Data Switches.

-Prepare and gather necessary information for departmental adds, moves or changes. Maintain and update database of user records containing information such as line extension, department, location, floor/room number and station jack number. Access and resolve Help Desk work orders.

-Maintain an ongoing knowledge of all Voice, Data, CATV, Video and Wireless communication hardware and software. Assist vendors when installing and field-testing equipment at all remote sites.

-Monitor the status of the routers, servers, PSTN circuits, and IP trunks daily to ensure that the systems are up and running without errors or alarm indications.

-Test and benchmark new communication equipment before installation.

-Maintain parts and equipment inventory. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

-Familiar with Personal Computer operating systems and software application deployment and troubleshooting.

-Demonstrated experience with Voice, Data, CATV, Video and Wireless network administration, troubleshooting, and support concepts.

-Demonstrated experience with Cisco phone, voice mail systems and associated applications.

-Familiarity with routers and switches.

-Knowledge of T1, SIP, TDM PRI and LAN/WAN connection types and protocols.

-Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and/or at least 5 years’ experience in the voice or data communication environment.

-Current driver’s license and the ability to drive a van.

-Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to climb ladders.
